Oceanic Organizations

Blue Frontier Campaign works to support seaweed (marine grassroots) efforts at the local, regional and national level, with an emphasis on bottom up organizing to bring the voice of citizen-activists into national decision-making that will impact our public seas. There are now some 2,000 blue groups working on ocean and coastal conservation but largely operating in isolation, and with little coordinated effort among them.

Captain Jacques-Yves Cousteau

Cousteau Society Educating people to understand, to love and to protect the water systems of the planet, marine and fresh water, for the well-being of future generations. When Captain Jacques-Yves Cousteau  his teams embarked aboard Calypso to explore the world, no one yet knew about the effects of pollution, over-exploitation of resources and coastal development.

EarthEcho International is a nonprofit organization founded in 2000 by Philippe and Alexandra Cousteau in honor of their father Philippe Cousteau Sr.  EarthEcho’s mission is to inspire individuals to become better stewards of our water planet and enable them to adopt and maintain behaviors that are more consistent with sustainable living.



Living Oceans Society Living Oceans Society is a non-profit research and public education organization that promotes the need for a healthy ocean and healthy communities on Canada’s Pacific Coast.



Marine Conservation Society The Marine Conservation Society  is a United Kingdom charity dedicated to protecting the marine environment and its wildlife.


 

Oceana  Their teams of marine scientists, economists, lawyers and advocates win specific and concrete policy changes to reduce pollution and to prevent the irreversible collapse of fish populations, marine mammals and other sea life. Global in scope, Oceana has campaigners based in North America, Europe  and South America. More than 300,000 members and e-activists in over 150 countries have already joined Oceana.

Oceans Alive Oceans Alive works to find constructive solutions to the most critical problems facing the world's marine environments. Their team of scientists, attorneys, policy experts and economists focuses on protecting ecosystems and fisheries and focuses their efforts to stem the tide of decline in our seas.

Ocean Defense International Ocean Defense International is a non-profit all-volunteer organization formed to combat the destruction of the oceans and its inhabitants. We embrace the principles of nonviolent direct action and veganism. Through education and action we intend to stress the importance of a life free of exploitation for all animals.

 

Oceanic Preservation Society The Oceanic Preservation Society (OPS) is a non-profit organization founded in 2005 by photographers, filmmakers, and eco-activists. Sparked by the love of the oceans, and concern at their evident decline, OPS shows the world, through visual media, what is happening on 70% of our planet.

Reef Check Founded in 1996, Reef Check is a volunteer, ocean conservation organization designed to save coral reefs globally and temperate reefs in California. Reef Check is active in over 82 countries and territories throughout the world.

Reef Relief Reef Relief is a nonprofit membership organization dedicated to Preserve and Protect Living Coral Reef Ecosystems through local, regional and global efforts. Their focus is on rigorous science to educate the public & advocate policymakers to achieve conservation , protection , and restoration of coral reefs.

Save Our Seas SOS is an international Hawai'i based  non-profit organization that utilizes education and research to preserve, protect, and restore the world’s oceans for future generations.

Sea Shepherd Conservation Society Sea Shepherd's mission is to conserve and protect the world's marine wilderness ecosystems and marine wildlife species. They accomplish these goals through public education, investigation, documentation and where legal authority exists under international law or under agreement with national governments, enforcement of violations of the international treaties, laws and conventions designed to protect the oceans.
 

Surfrider Foundation  The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world's oceans, waves and beaches for all people, through conservation, activism, research and education.
 

The Coral Reef Alliance The Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL) is a member-supported, non-profit organization, dedicated to protecting the health of coral reefs by integrating ecosystem management, sustainable tourism, and community partnerships.

Through research, education, and science-based advocacy, The Ocean Conservancy informs, inspires, and empowers people to speak and act on behalf of the oceans. In all its work, The Ocean Conservancy strives to be the world's foremost advocate for the oceans.

The Ocean Project An initiative that intends to create in people a lasting, measurable, top-of-mind awareness of the importance, value, and sensitivity of the oceans. Though collaboration among aquariums, zoos, science, technology and natural history museums, and other educational institutions, the Ocean Project aims to significantly increase the success of ocean conservation.

Conservation International Conservation International's mission is to conserve the Earth's living natural heritage and global diversity.
 

Defenders of Wildlife Defenders of Wildlife is dedicated to the protection of all native wild animals and plants in their natural communities. They focus their programs on what scientists consider two of the most serious environmental threats to the planet: the accelerating rate of extinction of species and the associated loss of biological diversity, and habitat alteration and destruction.

Earthjustice Founded in 1971 as Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund, Earthjustice  is a non-profit public interest law firm dedicated to protecting the magnificent places, natural resources, and wildlife of this earth and to defending the right of all people to a healthy environment. We bring about far-reaching change by enforcing and strengthening environmental laws on behalf of hundreds of organizations and communities.

Environmental Defense Environmental Defense is a leading national non-profit organization representing more than 400,000 members. Since 1967, they have linked science, economics and law to create innovative, equitable and cost-effective solutions to society's more urgent environmental problems. Their mission is to protect the environmental rights of all people, including future generations. Among these rights are clean air, clean water, healthy food and flourishing ecosystems.

Global Green USA Global Green USA works with governments, industry and individuals to create a global value shift toward a sustainable and secure future. Global Green is addressing three great challenges facing humanity: climate change, weapons of mass destruction and the need for clean water.

 

Global Response   empowers people of all ages, cultures and nationalities to protect the environment by creating partnerships for effective citizen action. At the request of indigenous people and grassroots organizations, Global Response organizes urgent international letter campaigns to help communities prevent many kinds of environmental destruction.

Greenpeace      Greenpeace International Greenpeace is a non-profit organization, with a presence in 40 countries across Europe, the Americas, Asia and the Pacific. As a global organization, Greenpeace focuses on the most crucial worldwide threats to our planet's biodiversity and environment.

Green Corps environmental organizing. Green Corps' mission is to teach the next generation of environmental leaders the strategies and skills they'll need to win tomorrow's environmental battles while providing critical field support for today's pressing environmental problems 

National Audubon Society
Audubon's mission is to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds, other wildlife, and their habitats for the benefit of humanity and the earth's biological diversity. Their national network of community-based nature centers and chapters, scientific and educational programs, and advocacy on behalf of areas sustaining important bird populations, engage millions of people of all ages and backgrounds in positive conservation experiences.

National Resources Defense Council NRDC is one the nation's most effective environmental action organizations. They use law, science and the support of more than one million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all living things.


 

National Wildlife Federation  The National Wildlife Federation inspires Americans to protect wildlife for our children's future. In existence since 1936, they have over four million members and supporters joined by affiliated wildlife organizations in 47 states and territories.

 


Sierra Club The Sierra Club's membership is more than 750,000, and inspired by nature, they work together to protect communities and the planet. The Club is  one of the largest, oldest and most influential grassroots environmental organizations in the world.

The Center For Ecosystem Survival The Center for Ecosystem Survival is dedicated to creating global partnerships to inspire broad based participation in the preservation of biological diversity through ecosystem protection worldwide. CES has a number of signature programs, including Adopt a Reef, Adopt an Acre, Nature Savers and Conservation Parking Meters.

Their is to preserve the plants, animals and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive.

The Wilderness Society Their mission is to deliver to future generations an unspoiled legacy of wild places, with all the precious values they hold: Biological diversity, clean air and water; towering forests, rushing rivers and sage-sweet silent deserts.

Union of Concerned Scientists The Union of Concerned Scientists is a non-profit partnership of scientists and citizens combining rigorous scientific analysis, innovative policy development and effective citizen advocacy to achieve practical environmental solutions.

 

WildAid  The mission of WildAid is to decimate the illegal wildlife trade within our lifetimes. Their programs disrupt the trade at every level by reducing poaching, targeting illegal traders and smugglers, and drastically lowering consumer demand for endangered species parts and products.

Wildlife Conservation Society The Wildlife Conservation Society saves wildlife and wild lands. They do so through careful science, international conservation, education, and the management of the world’s largest system of urban wildlife parks, led by the flagship Bronx Zoo.
 



World Wildlife Fund The World Wildlife Fund  leads international efforts to protect endangered species and their habitats. Now in its fifth decade, WWF works in more than 100 countries around the globe to conserve the diversity of life on earth. With nearly 1.2 million members in the U.S. and another 4 million worldwide, WWF is the world's largest privately financed conservation organization.
